University Police Department

  • Crime Prevention Programs

Operation ID Program

This program is a statewide effort to discourage burglary and theft by engraving your property with an easily traced identification number. This number is traceable throughout the entire U.S. This is a free service provided by the University Police Dept.

Meet the University Police Department

This program highlights the role of campus law enforcement at SUNY Cortland. Meet Officer Frank Dalton or Lt. Bennett who will discuss the professional role that your University Police Officers play on campus.

Operation Lockout Program

This program was developed as an anti-theft program in the residence halls. The program shows the students how easy it is to become a victim of a crime. Students are shown simple steps to prevent theft and enhance their safety.

Self Defense Program

This program is designed to offer students the opportunity to learn how to defend themselves. This program also stresses preventive measures students can take to avoid becoming the victim of a crime.

Sexual Assault Awareness Program

This program is designed to offer members of the campus community the opportunity to speak with a University Police Officer in small groups, on the topic of sexual assault awareness and campus issues. The topics discussed will touch upon victims rights, support services, campus policies concerning sexual assault and NY State Penal Law.

Fatal Vision Program

The University Police at SUNY Cortland provides "The Fatal Vision Program" as an educational program for the campus community. The guiding principle of this program is to demonstrate how quickly impairment can turn fun into potentially devastating consequences for anyone who drives while impaired by alcohol or other drugs. Fatal Vision Simulator Goggles are employed to simulate different levels of impairment. The program consists of an educational discussion on New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws pertaining to driving while impaired and the consequences they bring if convicted. Also activities using the Fatal Vision Goggles are used to show how different levels of impairment will affect a person's reaction time as well as their ability to perform certain tasks.

If you have any crime prevention concerns please feel free to call the University Police Department 24 hours a day at (607) 753-2112.
