University Police Department

  • Safety Tips

Safety Tips to Remember:

  • Whenever you are on the street, in an office building, in your residence hall, walking the university grounds or driving, stay alert and tuned into you surroundings.

  • Send the message that you're calm, confident and know where you are going.

  • Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave the area and call the University Police.

  • Know the campus or city streets where you live and work. Check out the location of the campus emergency blue light phone boxes.

  • Stick to well lighted, well traveled areas. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas and parking lots and NEVER walk alone at night.

  • Try to use automated teller machines in the daytime. Have your card in hand and don't approach the machine if you're uneasy about people nearby.

  • Have your residence hall key in hand before you reach the front door. Do not wear your keys around your neck on a rope or string key chain. This allows an attacker to use the key chain to cut off your airway.

  • If you think someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk towards an open building or look for a blue light emergency phone to call the University Police Department.

  • If you have to work or study late, make sure there are others in the building and someone knows where you will be. If you feel uneasy have someone walk you to your vehicle or residence. The campus offers a bus service until 3 AM.

  • Always roll up your windows and lock your vehicle doors, even if you're coming right back. Also remove all of your valuables or place them in the trunk.

If you have a crime prevention concern please feel free to contact the University Police at (607) 753-2112
