Information on Net-Id

Beginning January 2006 Information Resources will begin the implementation of a campus-wide authentication procedure. This will require everyone using computers in labs and classrooms to log in using a valid Net-Id.

What is a Net-Id?

Your Net-Id is a form of authentication that requires an assigned user ID and password to log on to all networked computers. You Net-Id will identify you to the networked computer systems on campus. It will serve as a method to allocate resources and security.

What does authentication mean to me?

Authentication is a means of secure network identification. Everyone will be required to authenticate (login) to the campus network in order to use an public computer. This will include all technology classrooms, computer labs, portable projection carts, etc. Details of this procedure and its implications will be forthcoming as well as information regarding instruction and training.

What else besides security does using a Net-Id give me?

For faculty and staff your "U" drive will be mapped to any machine you login on. Your Net-Id will give you the ability to access network resources much more easily and efficiently. The Net-Id also paves the way to give students access to network resources, including network storage.

Why is a Net-Id necessary? It would appear easier without one.

It would be easier to go to an ATM and not supply a card or PIN, but you must positively identify yourself to the system in order to conduct transactions. Your Net-Id provides that same level of security. information technology is critical in supporting the College mission. We rely heavily on our computers and the network for teaching and day-to-day operations. We have places more critical, confidential and personally identifiable information on-line. This requires us to constantly enhance and improve our information security efforts. The campus-wide authentication process is necessary to better secure our technology resources. it provides an additional level of security to effectively secure our network resources and mission critical electronic information from unauthorized use. Your Net-Id will serve as a means to protect everyone's identity and combat spammers, hackers, unscrupulous cyber users, and viruses.

Who will this affect?

Anyone using a public computer on campus will be required to authenticate. This includes students, faculty and staff.

Do I know my Net-Id?

For faculty and staff your Net-Id is the same account you use today to check your email, and logon to your office computer. Your Net-Id will not change, and your password will remain the same. For students, beginning January 2006, your Net-Id will be your Cortland ID number. If you have a web mail account, it will be converted to a Net-Id. Your account name will be your C-number, your password will remain the same, and your email address will remain the same.

How will I know when and where this will take place?

We plan to have certain labs and classrooms completed by the beginning of the Spring 2006 semester. Notification of what classrooms and labs will be affected will be sent out as soon as those plans are completed. Signs will also be places in each classroom and lab indication whether you need to log on to the computer.
