CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 16, 2004) – As the 2004 academic year came to a close, it was time to pass out honors for students, faculty and guests at the Annual Cortland Sport Management Awards Ceremony in April and the 2004 State University of New York at Cortland Commencement Ceremonies in May.

At this year's graduation, New York Knicks center and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo was presented with an Honorary Doctorate by the college to celebrate his efforts to improve the quality of life for the people in his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other developing nations. Mutombo was nominated for the honor by sport management professor David Snyder, and sport management faculty and students hosted the 7-2 basketball star during his two-day stay in Cortland.

Women's Sports Foundation President Donna Lopiano gave the keynote address at the awards ceremony, held each year to honor the achievements of Cortland Sport Management students. Summa Cum Laude graduating senior Erin Rurey won the top award in the SUNY System, the Chancellor's Award for Student Academic Excellence. This marked the second year in a row that a Cortland Sport Management student received the honor. Karin Pindle won it in 2003. Another Summa Cum Laude graduating senior, Douglas Forster, won the Suzanne Wingate Memorial Scholarship Award, a $1,000 award given from funds raised during the annual Wingate Memorial Golf Tournament each September.
