CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 2007) – At the 2007 State University of New York College at Cortland Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies on May 19, the Cortland Sport Management Department graduated 116 undergraduate students, 36 of them with honors. The department also graduated its first-ever class of graduate students on May 18 as 8 of the 17 enrolled in the inaugural master of science cohort last fall were able to complete the program in one year. In addition, a multitude of awards and honors were presented at the Annual Cortland Sport Management Awards Ceremony in April.

At undergraduate graduation, students were addressed by honorary degree recipients Dr. Sylvia Earle and Robert Antin. Earle is an explorer-in-residence for the National Geographic Society and a National Women’s Hall of Fame inductee. Antin revolutionized the veterinary care industry in the United States in 1986 when he and his brother, Art, created Veterinary Centers of America, Inc. (VCA).

At the Awards Ceremony, the keynote speaker was Mike Veeck, president and part owner of six minor league baseball teams and the author of Fun Is Good. Veeck is the son of Major League Baseball Hall-of-Fame owner and business pioneer Bill Veeck.

The Awards Ceremony is held each year to honor the achievements of Cortland Sport Management students. Summa Cum Laude graduating seniors Lindsay Marranca and Glenn Odebralski (each graduated in 2006) won the top award in the SUNY System, the Chancellor's Award for Student Academic Excellence. 2007 marked the fifth year in a row that a Cortland Sport Management student received the honor. Sean Trask won it in 2006, Kendra Hayle won it in 2005, Erin Rurey won it in 2004 and Karin Pindle won it in 2003. Katie Boyes won the Suzanne Wingate Memorial Scholarship, recognized as the top award in the department. It carries a $1,000 award given from funds raised during the annual Wingate Memorial Golf Tournament each September. Christina Buergin won the Dolores Bogard Scholarship, an annual award presented for outstanding service in athletic event management.
