X-GAMES GOLD MEDALIST CARA-BETH BURNSIDE TO SPEAK AT CORTLAND SPORT MANAGEMENT EXTREME SPORT CONFERENCE

March, 2007 - The SUNY Cortland Sport Management Club will host its first ever Extreme Sports Conference on March 19-20.  The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held both days at 5 p.m. in the Function Room in Corey Union.

The event features a keynote address delivered by X-Games gold medalist and a pioneer of women's skateboarding and snowboarding, Cara-Beth Burnside.  The two-day event (see schedule below) will also feature panels of speakers from around the area representing facilities and merchandising and sales in extreme sports. The panels include representatives from Greek Peak Mountain Resort, Cortland Youth Bureau, HeadRush Action Sports, Nordic Sports, CNY Power Sports and FBM BMX Incorporated.

Burnside’s presentation will start at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20.  She will be accompanied by Drew Mearns, president and chief executive officer of Xcite Management Group, Inc.  Mearns is responsible for finance, development, programming and administration of XMG’s proprietary sports and special event business divisions.  He will be speaking out on the rise of women in extreme sports.

Burnside is considered to be one of the top extreme sports female athletes. Her list of achievements include placing fourth on the first Olympic snowboarding team in 1998. She is also the only female to ever win gold medals in both the Winter and Summer X-games.  She is actively involved in Action Sports Alliance, where she was the first president. Action Sports Alliance is an organization that is a “non-profit association of professional women skateboarders and other action sports athletes who have united to develop and promote their sport by empowering and encouraging young women's participation as well as increasing professional opportunities.”

The Extreme Sports Conference is supported by the Sport Management Club, the Sport Management Department, Hampton Inn, Student Government Association, Mandatory Activity Fee, CALS Grant and SUNY Cortland.
