March 17, 2006 - The State University of New York at Cortland, which has
the only undergraduate sport management department in the SUNY system, will launch SUNY’s first sport management master’s degree program starting in fall 2006. The program was officially approved by SUNY and the New York State Education Department in March.
The Master of Science in Sport Management is designed as a full-time, 30-credit program, requiring a core of six specific courses, three elective courses and a three-credit culminating internship or thesis.
Like the undergraduate sport management degree program, it balances theory and practice. Each graduate will gain a firm understanding of the management, business, cultural, ethical and legal foundations of the field of sport management.
“As an applied field of management, it is essential that students be able to incorporate and apply lessons learned through their own work experience and backgrounds,” said sport management department interim chair David Snyder. “This program will allow students and professionals to receive an advanced, hands-on education that will develop their knowledge and skill-sets to prepare them for a successful career in the sport industry.”
Students will be immersed in a required group of core courses (18 credit hours) and then choose additional elective offerings that focus on their specific area of interest (6-9 credit hours). The program will also require either an internship/project (3 credits) or thesis (3 credits).
The curriculum will include courses that take advantage of the department’s unique Sport Media & Technology Learning Center and its sport-specific information technology training and certifications.
The department plans to have 2-3 cohorts of 25 students each in the fall (50-75 students). Dr. James Reese, who previously worked for the Denver Broncos and Ohio University’s sport management department, has been hired as the Graduate Program Coordinator. Several candidates have been invited to interview for an additional graduate faculty position in the program. There will also be two graduate assistantship positions available.
Applications for admission for the fall 2006 semester are currently being accepted. Students may download the graduate application from the college Web site at the link above. Print “Sport Management” on the application. Interested students are encouraged to apply immediately for consideration for fall 2006.
