
WINGATE
TOURNAMENT RAISES OVER $7K FOR SPORT MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

CORTLAND,
NY (Sept. 23, 2003) — The sport management program
at the State University of New York College at Cortland held its
annual Suzanne Wingate Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, Sept.
20 at the Willowbrook Golf Course in Cortland. The event, which
included 18-holes of golf, a silent auction and a barbeque chicken
dinner, raised $7,670 in profit.

On
the 14th hole, a par-3, Dan Shearer from Ithaca scored a hole-in-one.
The foursome of Matt Hazzard, Nick Rhyde, Brian Kuchta and Mike
Ford finished first of the 30-team field with a score of 58.
Proceeds
from the tournament benefited the Suzanne Wingate Memorial Scholarship
Fund for sport management majors. The scholarship, given each
spring, became endowed in 2001. Previous recipients of the award
are: Thomas Haslett (2003), Karin Pindle (2002), Chad Homer (2001),
Brian Duprey (1999), Joseph Barbarito (1998) and Brian Marion
(1997).
The
tournament, in its eighth year, is named after former SUNY Cortland
professor Dr. Suzanne Wingate. Wingate, who was an avid golfer,
is credited with founding the college’s sport management
program and worked there from 1985 until her death from cancer
in 1995.
