THE MAJOR AND THE PROFESSION

The department offers two majors:

  1. Speech Language Disabilities—Teacher Certification (SLD) which leads to a bachelor of science (B.S.), qualification for initial certification as teacher of students with speech and language disabilities and preparation for graduate study.
  2. Speech and Hearing Science (SHS) leads to a bachelor of science Degree (B.S.) and preparation for entry into graduate school without teacher certification.
Both programs prepare you for admission to a master's degree program in speech pathology or audiology. It is not too early to begin making long-range plans for your graduate education. You are entering a master's degree profession. Membership in and certification by our national professional organization, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA),  is not open to those without a master's degree.

A master's degree is also required for a New York State License in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. In New York State, a license is required to work in such settings as clinics, hospitals and rehabilitation centers. A school setting is the only employment opportunity available to those with a bachelor's degree and teacher certification. To continue teaching in the schools, you must obtain a professional certification which requires a master's degree in speech -language pathology and audiology.

It should be noted that as of 2012, those who enter the profession of audiology will need an Au.D. (clinical Doctorate) to obtain their Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA. A master's degree is still the requirement for a New York State license in audiology.
