FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions)
Related to Service Learning

What is service-learning?
Service-learning combines academic studies with volunteer service in the community.

Is service-learning the same as internships?
Although service-learning and internships are related, service-learning is strictly volunteerism that is integrated within a course, while internships are usually paid positions that are career-focused.

Is there a service-learning requirement for graduation at SUNY Cortland?
At this time there is not a graduation requirement at Cortland for service-learning participation.

What are some examples of the types of service work I could perform?
There are many different service learning opportunities available, ranging from working with children, the elderly, or other specifically defined populations; working in office environments; assisting in field work; participating in activism activities; and many more. Dozen of placement opportunities are available both on campus and in the Cortland community.

How is service-learning integrated with a course?
The service-learning experience is integrated into courses depending on how individual instructors design their syllabi. Some requirements in some courses may be optional, while others may be mandatory. Some service learning courses are writing intensive, particularly in the English Department which offers several sections of service learning composition courses (CPN 102 and 103, Academic Writing in the Community) for students who wish to meet the graduation requirement for composition and participate in volunteer service.

What if my instructors do not offer service-learning and I want to participate?
You may visit the Career Services office in Van Hoesen Hall and arrange an individual volunteer project. You may also wish to speak with your instructors and tell them of your desire to participate in a service-learning project and see if they will work with you on arranging such an activity.

Can I do service-learning in more than one class?
Because of the volunteer hours required outside the classroom, we do not recommend that students take more than a single service learning course per semester.

Can I do my service-learning where I currently work or volunteer?
Generally not; typically a service-learning experience is designed to give students a new experience.

How many hours do I have to volunteer?
Typical obligations range from 10 to 30 hours.

Can I volunteer at an agency that is not on the list of approved agencies?
No, tremendous logistical problems would arise. You may select only from the approved list with the knowledge of your instructor, and in some cases (placements in K-12 classroom settings, for example) Career Services.
