Benefits of Service Learning to Students

Based on the results of other Service Learning programs throughout the country, it is apparent that tangible benefits accrue to students who participate in Service Learning-based courses. Studies indicate that Service Learning participants

• Increase chances of securing scholarships in their junior and senior years

• Improve chances for graduation

• Realize greater post-graduation earning power (6 to 7% higher starting salary)

• Develop a "greater appreciation for diversity"

• In addition, in New York State, education majors earn 20 hours of pre-service field observational studies in each service-learning composition section. (Beginning February 2, 2004, NCATE accreditation demands 100 hours of such studies for pre-service teachers).
