Residence Hall Staffing Patterns

Each residence hall is under the direction of a residence hall director. The director is responsible for the administration of the building. Resident assistants (RA), supervised by the hall director, assist with administration of the building, including roommate conflicts, facility concerns, programming and judicial referrals.

As employees of SUNY Cortland, residence hall directors and resident assistants are valuable resources to the students. It is important for every student to introduce themselves to the hall director and RA.

Most halls have seven RAs, with the exception of DeGroat Hall, which has six, Glass Tower, which has four, Whitaker Hall, which has three, and Casey and Smith Towers, which have 16. Also, West Campus Apartments has four student managers.

All residence halls have an administrative assistant (AA), who is also supervised by the hall director. The AA is responsible for mail delivery, updating bulletin boards, organizing the staff office, and various other administrative duties.

Residence halls also have one academic peer mentor (APM). APMs aid students with issues related to curricula, academic policies, study skills and career planning. Though a member of the residence hall staff, the APM also receives training and support from other offices on campus.

Each hall has a custodial staff that works from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. five days a week. The custodial staff is responsible for the general upkeep and appearance of the building. However, they are not expected to clean up major messes left by students, nor will the custodial staff clean individual rooms. We encourage students to get to know their cleaning staff.

For additional security, Night Clerks are on duty every night. They are stationed in the lobby of each residence hall from Sunday through Wednesday, 11 p.m.-2 a.m., and Thursday through Saturday 11 p.m.-3 a.m. The night clerk's job is to identify and admit persons who wish to enter the building. Visitors and unregistered guests will not be admitted during these hours unless approved and hosted by a resident of the building.

Night Clerks work closely with residence hall staffs and with the University Police Department. Students must have their I.D. Card and keys at all times. Student cooperation with the night clerks is essential.
