Room Selection Process for Current Students

Room Selection Process (RSP) 2008-2009

Read all the instructions below.  If you have any RSP questions, see your Residence Hall Director, or contact the Office of Residential Services, B-33 Van Hoesen.

SUNY Cortland’s room selection process is based on both of the following:
Credit Hours: Each student’s credit hours towards graduation as of December 2007.  Students with the most credit hours, plus Dean’s List points, choose first.
Dean’s List Points:  An extra 3 points will be added to your total credit hours for each semester you have been on the Dean’s List at SUNY Cortland.

The four steps to RSP 2008-2009:
Step 1.   Attend an Information Meeting, Feb. 11 – 14, 2008
Freshmen are highly encouraged to attend since they are required to live in on-campus housing their sophomore year.  Exceptions to this requirement are freshmen who will be 21 by September 1, 2008.
* ALL students should review the RSP 2008-2009 Power Point available on the residential services web page (www.cortland.edu/reslife).

Step 2.    Pay your $150 room deposit by 4:00 p.m. on March 4, 2008

Step 3.    Fill out online R.S.P. Housing Form by March 6, 2008
(available 24 hours after deposit payment)

Step 4.    Choose your room online in time ticket order by 4 p.m. on April 4, 2008
                * Time tickets are available on March 17, 2008.

Who is eligible to select a room during RSP 2008-2009?
Eligible students are SUNY Cortland students currently living on campus (this includes West Campus Apartments) or students doing field work, student teaching, internship, or study abroad whose last Cortland address was a residence hall.  Non-eligible students include off-campus students, graduate and prospective new students, as well as non-SUNY Cortland students.
Missed Deadlines:  Students who miss any of the deadlines listed above will not be permitted to select a room during RSP 2008-2009.  Current Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who miss any of the RSP deadlines will not be guaranteed on campus housing at all for the Fall 2008-2009 year.

Suite Selection, Quad-Double Selection and
West Campus Apartments Selection

Suite Selection – Alger, Clark, Higgins, Casey, Smith:  You can select a suite as individuals, roommate pairs or groups.  To select as a group, 3 groups of 2 roommates select the earliest time ticket for each roommate pair, then use the latest time ticket of the 3 in order to sign 6 students up at the same time.  If roommate pairs in a group choose NOT to wait for the latest time ticket of the entire group, there is NO guarantee to be in a suite all together!  (see next page for example)

Suites available during RSP include both 4 and 6 person suites in Towers (Casey and Smith).  Clark and Higgins have 6 person suites with 2 designed singles and 2 double rooms per suite.  Alger suites have 3 double rooms.

West Campus Apartment Selection:  You can select in an apartment as an individual, or as a group.  To select as a group, use the latest time ticket of the group in order for the group to select at the same time.  If the group chooses NOT to wait until the latest time ticket to select, there is NO guarantee to be in an apartment together!

Quad-Double Selection – Glass Tower Hall:  You can select in a quad-double as individuals, roommate pairs or groups.  To select as a group use  the earliest time ticket for each roommate pair, then use the latest time ticket of the 2 in order to have 4 students be online at the same time.  If roommate pairs in a group choose NOT to wait for the latest time ticket of the entire group, there is NO guarantee to be in a Quad all together!

Suite/Apartment/Quad Selection:  If you are interested in signing up for a suite or apartment with a group of friends, and choose NOT to wait for the latest time ticket, there is NO guarantee that you will be in a suite or apartment together.  As a roommate pair, you are only entitled to one room, whether in a suite, apartment, or quad!

Important Feature for Suite /Apartment/Quad Selection:  A box has been added to the FINAL Review Page where a student can check yes to:

“I am Looking for Suite/Apartment/ Quad-Mates”

DO NOT CLICK ON THIS BOX if you have friends who you’d like to see sign up in that suite, apartment or quad.  NOTE: Regardless of what is checked in this box, any student can select ANY AVAILABLE ROOM AT ANY TIME once their time ticket is open.

● Use this if “swapping” rooms with someone.   It will temporarily un-assign only you, and anyone else online can take your space.  When flip-flopping, only 1 person needs to use this feature.  The Temporary Un-assign will not count towards the 3 allowed room changes.

After 3 housing selection changes, you will need to contact the Office of Residential Services to make any further changes.  As a result of being permitted to make changes during RSP, please note that there will be NO changes permitted (i.e. flip-flop or room changes in suites or apartments) at the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester!

Frequently Asked Questions/Further Guidelines
Consolidation:  The Office of Residential Services reserves the right to reassign any student without a roommate.  Students are consolidated within the residence hall they chose during the room selection process.  Consolidation usually takes place during the summer as spaces open up.
Designed Singles: Please note that there is an additional cost for designed singles.  These singles are available in Alger, Clark, Higgins and Whitaker.  Clark & Higgins also have 6-person suites with 2 designed singles in each suite.

Roommates:  Your chosen roommate can select you using your Housing ID. You should use the earlier of your two appointments.  The student with the earlier appointment needs to be the primary selector (logs into the system).

Harassment
When a student selects a room, they have every right NOT to be harassed by any other student who also wanted that room.  Please note that any harassment of another student by sending abusive or threatening messages verbally or via phone, mail, email, or IM will be processed judicially and could result in the forfeit of your on-campus housing assignment. (College Code B-10. Electronic Use Policy and C-1. Harassment.)

Special Interest Housing

24-Hour Quiet Atmosphere Floors
(Higgins Hall, floors 6-8)
Three floors of Higgins Hall (6-8) have been designated as the 24-hour Quiet floors.  Students who select a 24-hour quiet atmosphere floor will be asked to sign a statement indicating that they understand the quiet guidelines and agree to abide by them.

Whitaker International Hall
Whitaker is the smallest residence hall, with a friendly international atmosphere.  All residents in Whitaker are required to participate in RHA and present one hall program per semester.  Whitaker has many designed single rooms, and double rooms, some of which have individual bathrooms.  We encourage you to sign up during room selection to live with an International roommate for an amazing cultural experience!

Designed Singles
(Alger, Clark, Higgins and Whitaker Halls)
Due to major renovations of the residence halls, there are over 200 designed single rooms available on campus during room selection.  These single rooms are charged at a higher rate.  Some singles are located in corridors, and some are in suites.

Wellness Floor
(Shea Hall)
The second floor of Shea Hall is the Wellness Floor.  Students on this floor sign an agreement not to use tobacco, drugs, or alcohol if under the age of 21, whether on or off campus.  If a student is 21 or older, they may consume alcohol responsibly.  Benefits of the wellness program include in-hall programming, hall sponsored recreational teams, and a positive living environment free from the “second-hand” effects of irresponsible/excessive alcohol use.

Suite Style Living
(Alger, Clark, Higgins, Casey Tower, and Smith Tower)
Casey Tower and Smith Tower are upperclass halls which consist of 2- and 3- bedroom suites, suitable for 4 or 6 students.  Each suite has a lounge and bathroom in addition to the bedrooms.

Alger Hall, Clark Hall, and Higgins Hall are our renovated high rises with two suites per floor.  Each 6-person suite in Clark and Higgins have two double bedrooms and two designed single bedrooms, as well as a lounge and bathroom.  Alger suites have three double bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge.  Suite singles have a higher room charge than doubles.

Please note that Fitzgerald Hall is closing in December 2008 for renovation. Returning students can sign up to live in Fitzgerald for one semester only, then will be reassigned.

Quad Doubles  (Glass Tower Hall)
Glass Tower Hall consists of quads with two double bedrooms that share a bathroom (for groups of 4).  Note that there is an additional charge to live in this highly desirable and newest residence hall with air conditioning.

West Campus Apartments
Enjoy the convenience of apartment living, while maintaining your connection to the campus.  The West Campus apartment complex provides bus transportation to campus, residence life staff, a recreation building with a laundry room, mailboxes, vending machines, and a computer lab.  Each apartment is fully furnished, has 4 single bedrooms, a living room, dining area, kitchen, and most apartments have 2 bathrooms.  Students living at West Campus are not required to have a meal plan and can remain in housing during all breaks, except summer.  Student teachers are encouraged to live at West Campus, as they cannot be housed on campus over breaks.

Over 21 Buildings
(West Campus Apartments)
Over 21 buildings are designed to meet the needs of older students. These buildings have Community Standards, which are decided upon by the members of the building in cooperation with campus policies.  Students selecting on these floors must be over 21 by September 1, 2008.

Winter Athlete Housing
(Clark, Hayes, Hendrick and West Campus Apts.)
These residence halls will open for winter athletes in January.  If you are a winter athlete and select in one of these residence halls, you can stay in your room in January.

All Freshman Halls
(Cheney, DeGroat and Randall)
Rooms in these residence halls will not be available during RSP.

Judson H. Taylor Leadership House
The JHT Leadership House is a unique living opportunity for students who are involved on campus and in the larger community.  Single rooms are available in the house for 11 students who share a commitment toward the common good and who work together to serve others.  As an added benefit, they learn about themselves in the process.

Leadership House students share a common kitchen and lounge area and may opt out of the meal plan; with an emphasis on community, life in the Leadership House is one of shared experiences and learning skills that will last a lifetime.

Students are selected for residency in the Leadership House based upon a group application process; first semester freshmen are ineligible for application.

Thank you for your continued interest in on campus housing!
