Resident Assistant
The role of the resident assistant (RA)is that of a liaison which serves as a link between the Student Affairs staff and students. The resident assistant’s primary function is to offer peer assistance and direction to students. The resident assistant is concerned with the growth and welfare of each individual in the hall and the group as a whole. The resident assistant is considered a member of the Residential Services staff and is directly supervised by the residence hall director (RHD) of the hall which he/she serves.
Resident assistants must be at least sophomore level undergraduate students.  They are selected on the basis of leadership, experience, scholarship, and the desire to help residents realize their self-development opportunities through group living in college residence halls. RAs are representatives of the Residential Services and, as college staff members, are expected to act as role models.
RAs have many roles: friend, counselor, leader, programmer, enforcer of college policies, staff member, and student. These varying roles are not mutually exclusive, but will be used at different times with different people in different situations. Within these roles, RAs have several areas of concern: their floor, their hall, and the college. They are to be sensitive to the needs of the floor, the hall, and the college as a whole, while being supportive of the college’s programs and activities. RAs are a unifying force which unites the floor and promotes a sense of belonging and community throughout the hall and the college.
The Resident Assistant position can be time-consuming and demanding. Therefore, it is imperative that students are in good academic standing before becoming RAs. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is required to go through the selection process. A 2.20 cumulative GPA is required at end of current semester in order to assume and maintain an RA position. Applicants must not have a current Judicial probationary status in order to apply.
