The SUNY Cortland Recreational Sports Department offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities to the entire College community. Programs are available to all students, faculty/staff and their families. Most programs/services are available at no charge to participants. However, in order to protect the recreational privileges of our SUNY Cortland affiliates and to provide a controlled, safe atmosphere in the facilities, participants are required to present a current SUNY Cortland photo identification card to participate. To assure fair, consistent enforcement, patrons are required to present their I.D. cards each time they participate.

The Recreational Sports Program is one of the many outstanding programs within the Division of Student Affairs. Most of the funding is derived from the Mandatory Student Activity Fee (MAF).

OUR MISSION

The goal of our SUNY Cortland Recreational Sports Department is to provide a variety of recreational opportunities that contribute to the physical, emotional and social health of all members of our College community. We will continuously develop programs and activities for our participants to increase their positive use of leisure time, improve their quality of life and encourage them to commit to a lifetime of fitness and recreation participation.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK

Inherent risks are associated with every recreational activity. Participants assume these risks when they agree to participate. All participants are strongly advised to secure health insurance and visit their physicians for a physical examination prior to registration or participation.

RECREATIONAL SPORTS PROGRAMS

INTRAMURAL SPORTS
Include a variety of team and individual/dual sports. These are structured activities for which there is a formal sign-up procedure, a schedule to follow, supervision/officiating, and a declared champion at the conclusion of competition. In order to meet the needs of all students, some sports are offered as single elimination tournaments, while many others are offered in a league format. Teams/individuals are guaranteed at least five league games whether they win or lose. All teams advance to a play-off tournament if they do not forfeit twice in league play. Competition in most sports is offered at highly competitive (All School) and recreational (just for fun) levels for men and women, as well as co-recreational activities.

SPORT CLUBS
Sport Clubs are student and faculty/staff interest groups in a particular activity. Current Sport Clubs include Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Cheerleading, Cortland Dance Company, Cortland Elite Steppers, Cycling, DanceWorks, Equestrian, Field Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Men's Ice Hockey, Kickline, Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Outdoor Adventure, Roller Hockey, Men's Rugby, Women's Rugby, Running, Ski/Snowboard, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Softball, Swim, Tae Kwon Do, Team Handball, Men's Volleyball, Women's Volleyball, Waterski/Wakeboard, and Wrestling. All Sport Clubs are funded by the Mandatory Student Activity Fee but operate under the auspices of the Recreational Sports Department. Contact the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for information on active clubs or possibly starting a new one.

CLUB RECREATION
A special program that allows alumni and non-SUNY Cortland community members the opportunity to use certain recreational facilities for a fee.

INFORMAL (OPEN) RECREATION
Involves unstructured, informal use of the recreational facilities. Activities include basketball, racquetball, swimming, jogging/running/walking, working out in the fitness facilities, wallyball, squash, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, and badminton.

EQUIPMENT CHECKOUT SERVICE
Available during Open Recreation hours in Park Center. Equipment may be checked out before 4 p.m. at the Recreational Sports Office in E-245 Park Center.

RACQUETBALL COURT RESERVATION SERVICE
Allows patrons to reserve a racquetball court. This service is provided through the Equipment Checkout Office at no charge.

TOMIK/WOODS FITNESS FACILITIES
These facilities offer the latest equipment and a staff trained to develop fitness programs, teach proper use of equipment, and maintain a safe, sanitary, cooperative, and efficient atmosphere for exercise.  Facility memberships for faculty/staff and their spouses/dependents are sold in the Recreational Sports office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Any questions or concerns about these facilities should be directed to the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for Fitness or the Director of Recreational Sports.

NON-CREDIT INSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Offers instruction and participation in sports and fitness-related activities for students, faculty/staff and community members.  We currently offer instruction in non-contact boxing, beginning and advanced yoga, beginning golf, intermediate golf and Washin-Ryu Karate.

OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM

A cooperative effort by the Departments of Recreation and Leisure Studies and Recreational Sports to provide a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities for the campus community which compliment the mission of the college and improve the quality of life.

AEROBICS

This program is managed though the fitness component of our Recreational Sports Program.  A variety of classes (currently 10 classes) are offered in our new aerobics studio in the Tomik Fitness Facility.  The program is free to students as part of the Mandatory Student Activity Fee, which is dedicated to the Recreational Sports Program.  Faculty/staff may participate by purchasing a membership to the fitness facilities or a specific aerobic membership.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
Approximately 175 students work as sport supervisors, officials, fitness and aerobics instructors, recreation facility supervisors, office workers, and lifeguards. Apply at the Recreational Sports Office. No previous experience is necessary, and there are opportunities for students on College Work Study and temporary service.
