In order to meet the needs of students with varying amounts of time, some sports are offered as single elimination/one day tournaments, while others are offered in a league format. In league play, teams/individuals are guaranteed at least five league games. Regardless of win/loss record, all teams are eligible for playoffs, provided that they do not forfeit more than one game. Teams with one forfeit must pay a $25.00 forfeit fee to be eligible for playoffs.
Students with varying skills may choose from two levels of competition: All-School (highly competitive) and Recreational (mostly for fun). Although awards are given to the winners of each level, the All-School division winners are the official campus champions.
Uniforms are required to participate in team sports. This makes it easier for officials and teammates to distinguish one team from another. It also enables proper game administration such as recording fouls, substitution of players, and penalty enforcement. Having uniforms also promotes team spirit and pride.
All Intramural activities are offered to students and faculty/staff at no charge, with the exceptions of golf and bowling. To become involved, follow this simple procedure:
Pick up an information packet pertaining to the sport you wish to enter. Packets are available approximately two weeks before the entry deadline at the display center outside the Equipment Checkout Office in Park Center, on the first floor of Corey Union, and at the entrance to the Tomik Fitness Facility.
- Thoroughly and accurately fill out the entry/roster form in the back of the packet and submit to the Recreational Sports Office at E-245 Park Center on or before the deadline. Rosters must be turned in between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Attend any captain's meetings.
- Familiarize yourself with the rules of the sport.
- Be sure to know when you are scheduled to play. Schedules are posted weekly on the Recreational Sports bulletin board in Park Center, just outside the Woods Fitness Facility and online at: http://www.cortland.edu/recsports/imschedule.htm.
Students having trouble finding a team to play with, or teams needing more members to add to their roster can make use of the Free Agent Board. It is located in two places:
- Recreational Sports Office at E-245 Park Center, bulletin board inside of office.
- “SUNY Cortland Intramural Sports ” Facebook group, where individuals/teams can post information.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION |
-
Only current students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate in Intramural competition. Spouses and dependents may not compete in intramural activities, but may use the recreation facilities during Open Recreation times.
-
Alumni are not eligible for Intramural activities. They may purchase a Club Rec membership at a reduced rate and use the facilities during Open Recreation hours. Alumni may also purchase a membership to the Tomik/Woods Fitness Facilities.
-
An individual can play for only one team in a particular sport. If found to be participating on more than one team, the individual will be immediately suspended from playing that sport and each team will be required to pay a $25.00 forfeit fee to continue in the competition.
-
The following individuals are ineligible to participate in the same or related Intramural Sport, during the academic year in which they gained their ineligible player status:
-
Any member of a varsity or JV team who remains with the team beyond the team's first contest of the season.
-
Any member of a recognized sport club who competes extramurally as a representative of SUNY Cortland.
- Related sports include but are not limited to: baseball/softball; volleyball/wallyball; outdoor/indoor soccer; football/flag/arena/football; basketball/3-point shootout/3-on-3 basketball/5-on-5 basketball/free throw contest; and ice/floor hockey. All contests that an ineligible player participates in will result in the immediate suspension of that player and the forfeiture of all games he/she participated in. In addition, that team will be required to pay a $25.00 forfeit fee to continue in the competition.
- Professionals, as recognized by the NCAA/AAU or the governing body for that sport, are not eligible to compete.
- Intentional eligibility violations are very serious and violators may lose their privilege of participating in Intramural Sports.
- Students are responsible for checking their own eligibility, and captains are equally responsible for the eligibility of all their players. DON'T TAKE A CHANCE - CHECK WITH THE RECREATIONAL SPORTS DEPARTMENT IF UNSURE.
In order to insure fair competition and to prevent teams from "picking up someone in the bleachers" to play with them, each participant must present a current SUNY Cortland photo identification card to participate. To insure fair, consistent enforcement, ID cards must be presented each time you participate.
Forfeiting an Intramural contest is inconsiderate and a waste of time and money for everyone involved, therefore, the following forfeit policy will be in effect:
- All team sport activities which require scheduling/rescheduling will be charged $25.00 per forfeit. All individual or dual activities that are set up in a league format will be charged $5.00 per forfeit.
- The forfeiting team/individual must pay the fee to the Recreational Sports Office, in E-245 Park Center, no later than noon the day BEFORE the next scheduled competition. Failure to do so will result in elimination from further competition.
- If a team forfeits once and pays the forfeit fee, then that team is still eligible for playoffs.
- If a team forfeits twice, that team will be immediately dropped from all competition in that sport.
- Forfeit fees are nonrefundable.
- In addition to this, a $25.00 fee will be charged to any team that fails to attend the mandatory captains' meeting. This fee does not count as a regular forfeit, but must be paid before the team is scheduled.
To be accepted, rosters must be turned in by the deadline to the Recreational Sports Office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Rosters that are incomplete or illegible will not be accepted. Rosters must be received by personnel in the Recreational Sports Office, not just placed on the desk. Rosters may not be turned into the Equipment Checkout Office. Only those individuals listed on the original roster or who have been officially added will be allowed to participate.
The Intramural Sports Supervisor will have the roster and approved drop/add forms on site at each Intramural event. Dropping/adding players to a team roster is allowed through the first week of competition only. This prevents teams from "stacking" their rosters and ensures fair competition. To drop/add players the team captain or co-captain must come by the Recreational Sports Office to complete and sign a drop/add form. Teams are limited to the number of roster spots available on the entry form.
If time and space allow, rescheduling of league team sports may be allowed. It will be designated in the information packets for each sport whether or not rescheduling is allowed for that sport. If it is “impossible” for your team to play as scheduled, then rescheduling MAY be considered. The Assistant Director or Graduate Assistant will try to accommodate your needs based on facility and employee availability. Some factors to consider are:
- All intramural activities must occur within the dates and times listed on the entry form.
- The request must be made to the Assistant Director or Graduate Assistant as soon as the conflict is known, but no later than 48 hours prior to game time.
- Available time slots will be discussed with both team managers. If the opposing team cannot reschedule, the game will take place as scheduled.
- If both teams agree to switch and employees are confirmed, the Assistant Director or Graduate Assistant will finalize the change.
Please remember: Team captains can indicate the team availability on the entry form. Please consider team members schedules prior to turning in the entry form. Your team roster should be large enough that you can accommodate the absence of one or more players.
All students and faculty/staff are encouraged to participate in as many intramural events as possible. However, participants are expected to behave in a mature, sportsmanlike manner. To encourage this kind of atmosphere, the following rules will be enforced:
-
Any player ejected form an Intramural contest is automatically suspended from his/her team's next two games and must meet with the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports before being reinstated.
-
Any player or spectator making physical contact or threatening an Intramural staff member will be immediately suspended from all Intramural activity indefinitely and must meet with the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports before being reinstated. That person may also be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs.
-
Playing under an assumed name/using someone else's ID constitutes a blatant violation of the Honor Code. Such violations will be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs for action.
-
Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in any recreational facility and any participant playing under the influence will be immediately ejected and referred to the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports. Captains are responsible for the behavior of their players, as well as their spectators.
Protests may be filed over eligibility of a participant or misinterpretation of a rule. Protests concerning the judgment of an official(s) will not be heard. See individual intramural entry packets for detailed procedures.
