INTRAMURAL SPORTS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
When is intramural registration? Intramural sports registration is on-going throughout the year. Check the calendar for the deadline of the sport/event that you are interested in playing. |
Who is eligible to play intramural sports? Any current SUNY Cortland student, faculty or staff member. A current Cortland ID must be must presented prior to participation each time you participate. |
How do I form a team? Ask other students in your residence hall, classes and clubs. RA's are also helpful when you first arrive to campus, since some RA's will create intramural teams from students on their floor. If you cannot find a team, use the FREE AGENT board. You can write your information on the Free Agent Board in the Recreational Sports Office, Park Center, E245, or online at the Facebook group SUNY Cortland Intramural Sports. You can also use the board to create a team if there are several other Free Agents looking for a team to play with. |
Is there a fee to sign-up an intramural team? No. Intramural sports are funded via the Recreational Sports Department via the Mandatory Student Activity Fee. (Exception: Golf and bowling since we do not have those facilities on our campus.) Most colleges and universities charge for intramurals, (example:SUNY Brockport charges $20 for indoor soccer) so you get a great value for your $40.00 fee that is dedicated to the Recreational Sports Department. |
How do I sign up for Intramural Sports? Pick up an information packet pertaining to the sport you wish to enter. Packets are available approximately two weeks before the deadline at the display center outside the Equipment Checkout Office in Park Center, on the first floor of Corey Union, and at the entrance to the Tomik Fitness Facility. NEW THIS YEAR: Entry forms, policies and rules are also available online. www.cortland.edu/recsports/intra/html |
Can I play on more than one team per sport? Yes, if the sport is offered as Co-Rec (CR) and single gender (M/W), then you may play in the league of your gender and the co-rec league. If it is only offered as co-rec or only as M/W, then you are only allowed to play on one team. |
Can I add players to my roster during the season? Yes. For team sports, there is a one week period after competition begins where you may add and drop players from your roster. The form is available in the Recreational Sports Office, Park Center, E245, M-F, between 8am-5pm. The new players cannot participate until this form is completed. |
What is a Free Agent? A Free Agent is someone who does not have a team to play on, but wishes to play. Team captains can view the Free Agent Board to find more players for their team. See "How do I form a team?" above. |
What sports are offered? Please see the calendar. If you would like to request a new sport, please contact Matt Nuesell. New sports are added based on student interest. Dodgeball, kickball and disc golf are three examples of activities added based on student interest. |
When are games played? Most games are played Sunday-Thursday, beginning at 7pm, and ending at 11pm, generally scheduled every hour. Broomball is an exception, beginning anywhere between 8-10pm and ending around 2am. Late night events (i.e. Friday Night Tournaments) begin at 8pm, with the championship games ending around 2am. |
How long does the season last? Intramural leagues generally last 5-7 weeks, depending on the number of teams and facilitiy availability. We try our best to schedule each team for 4-5 games before playoffs begin. |
How do I find out my team's game schedule? All schedules are posted online: Intramural Team Schedules, so everyone on your team can check the schedule. They are also posted outside the Woods Fitness Facility in Park Center. |
How do I find out if games are canceled if the weather is bad? The quickest way to find out is to go to the website where the schedules are posted. We will also attempt to call captains of all teams affected by the weather. We will play in rain and snow, as long as it is still safe, so prepare for inclement weather condiditons for outdoor sports. |
Can I reschedule games once the schedule has been posted? Occassionally, yes, a game can be rescheduled. However, due to the limited facility schedule for most sports, it may be impossible. Make sure that you have enough subs on your team to accomodate a game time where one or more players will be in class. To start the rescheduling process, please contact Matt Nuesell as soon as you realize that rescheduling will be needed. |
What happens if my team is a no show and forfeits? If your team forfeits a game for any reason, your team must pay a $25.00 forfeit fee to continue playing in the league. This is due as soon as possible, but no later than 12 noon the day prior your next scheduled game. If your team does not have another game that week, then the fee is due no later than 5pm on Thursday of the same week. Once the fee is paid, your team will be allowed to play the next game or be scheduled for more games. Your team will also still be eligible for playoffs. If the fee is not paid, your team will be dropped from the league and will not be eligible for playoffs. |
What is Melonball? Melon ball does not involve watermelon or cantaloupe. Melon ball is similar to volleyball because we play on a volleyball court, with a volleyball and with a volleyball net. We drop the net down to tennis net height. Then, the ball must bounce in between hits. Some volleyball skills are still used, but it also helps to be strategic and play angles. Height doesn't matter in melon ball! |
What is Quickball? Quickball is similar to wiffleball, in the use of a plastic bat and ball. However, Quickball also uses an "Auto-Ump" and a home run fence. Check out the Quickball website for more information about the sport. |
What is the Grid-Iron Guesser? The Grid-Iron Guesser is a weekly NFL pick-em. You guess which teams will win each match up. The person with the most correct picks wins a t-shirt! |
Can I work for Intramurals Sports? Yes! We staff 40-50 students every semester as intramural scorekeepers, officials and supervisors. Stop by the Recreational Sports Office, Park Center, E-245, to complete an application. |
What kind of training do the officials go through? Student officials go through sessions on rules and mechanics, and are evaluated prior to each intramural season. Participants must remember that most students are new to officiating and are doing their best to enforce the rules consistently. If you have any questions about intramural officiating, please contact Matt Nuesell or Sara Cavanaugh. |
