The Cortland Legacy

Recreation and leisure services is a complex and rapidly growing profession. It is also one of the most rewarding for those with the educational preparation and a commitment to excellence. The Department of Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies at Cortland is the largest professional preparation program of its kind in New York State. Fully accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association, Cortland's department is also one of the oldest and most highly respected programs in the United States. Many of the most distinguished recreation professionals and scholars began their careers by studying at SUNY Cortland.

Many unique features set this department apart from all others. The students make extensive use of the Raquette Lake Outdoor Education Center at historic Camp Huntington in the Adirondacks. Students host the annual Cortland Recreation Conference, a student-run conference that draws over 400 attendees each year. There are ample opportunities for international study and internships. The job outlook for graduates of this program is very bright, with over a 95% placement rate. Alumni are actively involved in the life of the college. Numerous endowed scholarships are awarded each year. It is a department that strives to live its vision:

Recreation and leisure are critical to healthy, happy people and stable communities. We will make a difference by educating students to become competent and caring citizens and professionals. We believe in freedom and self-determination expressed through leisure and its impact on quality of life and happiness. We will be agents of change for a better world. We will make a difference!
