Welcome to the Political Science Department

Political science is an academic and research discipline that deals with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior. The study of political science contributes to a broad liberal arts education and preparation for citizenship.

The programs we offer prepare students for active citizenship, careers and advanced training in law, political science and other fields. Our goal as a department is to educate students how to think critically about politics, and through this to develop their own theoretical, oral and quantitative skills. Through service learning, internship programs and a co-curriculum with public policy, international studies and African American studies, the department offers students experience in politics, government and the law.

The department also encourages interdisciplinary study through participation in overseas programs. The department also encourages its faculty to engage in constructive scholarship for the improvement of teaching and scholarly research leading to the presentation of papers at national conferences and to the publication of articles in scholarly journals and books. Our faculty members look forward to our continued success working with the students at SUNY Cortland.
