Narrative:

After receiving my PhD degree in Systems Science, I spent one year in the Netherlands at Delft University. I received an appointment of associate professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands and worked there full time until mid 1981 after which time I continued part-time. I was teaching Operations Research courses and Cybernetics until 1988. In 1981 I started a software distribution company in the Netherlands and Belgium.. The company specializes in network and internet connectivity software (Reflection), anti-virus software (Panda Software en F-Secure), Firewalls (Watchguard and Netwolves) and IT  and Security Consultancy. It employs about 30 people.  We moved back to the US in 1988 and started Softwarex, a company with similar interests and products as the Dutch company. Until 1995 I also was an adjunct faculty member at the North Carolina State University and worked with PhD Student on their Operation Research projects. From 1995 until 2000 I was involved with soccer at the national level. I am taking a break this year. We had the most successful women’s team in the W-League history with a 66-3 record in three years (two-time National Champions)including games against national teams from the US, Jamaica, Brazil, and Trinidad and Tabago.  Most of our players are currently on the new WUSA rosters. I am curently teaching for a Portugese company, Altitude Software, in the US and Canada. Plenty of travel to explain the technical workings of call center and interactive voice response systems. My companies are managed by excellent people.

I married Kristin Conrad (Cortland '74) in 1974 and we have two daughters, Kimberley (born in 1975) who graduated  with a Masters in Student Development from Appalachian State Unversity and currently is a director at Ithaca College and Angelina (born in 1978) who graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill with a degree in business. She currently works as an assistant buyer for Nieman Marcus,

Kris retited as a teacher in May of 2001.

So,  what ever happened to physics? use it every day: gravity makes me fall, quantum mechanics still baffle me, I start to understand Einstein, and soon I will grasp what Ram had told me all those years ago....

I graduated from Cortland in 1974 and went on to graduate school at St. Bonaventure University where I received my MS in Physics in 1976. My concentration was Astronomy and to this day I still enjoy studying the night sky.

My professional career has taken a slightly different turn, however.

In 1976 I traveled to San Diego at the urging of one of my graduate school.  Physics professors because he was going to try his hand with the emerging small computer software business. Since my training in Physics allowed me to learn computers and computer programming it was a natural fit to apply the logic of Physics and mathematics to general- purpose computer programming.  With that we hooked up with a Professor of Chemistry at a small school in San Diego where he had developed a small college administration software package. We took the rights of this package and started a software company (Chama) that struggled but enjoyed some degree of success. We worked exclusively with a small hardware company based in Sunnyvale, CA (BTI) and they offered me a job in 1980, which began my career shift into computer hardware.

In 1977 I married Belle DeLeon (Cortland 1973) and we stayed in San Diego until 1980 when we moved back east to settle in southern NJ working for BTI as a technical/sales specialist.

Over the next few years I stayed in the computer hardware business specializing in selling and supporting AT&T and then of course all the baby bells and other telecom providers. This included a successful time at Sperry Univac (that became UNISYS) and Pyramid (that became part of Seimens). By this time now, 1994, we had moved to Pennsylvania for UNIVAC, and back to New Jersey for Pyramid.

In 1994 Information Builders a 25-year-old software company based in Manhattan, approached me and I decided to get back into the software industry. I worked in Manhattan for about 2 years when they asked me to take over responsibility for selling to AT&T. This allowed staying in NJ and getting away from the daily 4-hour commute by train rat race. This past year I was promoted to Director of Telecom where I am responsible for a team of people who sell and support the major telephony companies in the USA.

We have settled into our life style here in New Jersey where Belle and I have two children, Andrew and Jessica. Andrew is a senior in high school and will be starting at Penn State in the fall of 2001. Jessica is a high school freshman.

I am active in the community as well. I serve on our local board of directors of our township athletic association and I served as the Soccer commission for 4 years. I am also a certified US Soccer Federation official and referee both community and scholastic soccer games.

I also serve as a member of our local technology steering community where I help out in our community efforts to bring technology into the classroom and the community.

I am very proud of the fact that I also serve on the board of directors for our county’s chapter of the American Red Cross. It is a fantastic organization and very rewarding helping out where I can.

I have always felt and have said many times that my training and experience at Cortland prepared for the interesting challenges over these many years.  At Cortland I was President of the Physics Club and worked as lab technician, and participated in several interesting clubs and activities. I thoroughly enjoyed my Cortland years.

My wife and family have enjoyed our ability to travel around the world, have varied interests, and return a little back to the community in our small way.
