Undergraduate Program

SUNY Cortland has a long standing and well deserved reputation in the field of Physical Education. We are proud to offer undergradute students the opportunity to earn a B.S.Ed. as well as a B.S.Ed. with a concentration in adapted physical education. The program also offers special options to study abroad, including study in Germany and Australia at University of Ballarat.*

The primary purpose of the B. S. Ed. program is to offer students professional preparation leading to certification to teach physical education K-12 and coach in New Your State public schools. This certification is also recognized by other states. In this program, professional preparation may be enhanced by the development of concentrations that allow some specialization for those students who already have an interest in a specific aspect of physical education. The programs includes theory, activity courses and student teaching experiences. Elective hours may also be used to enroll in a study abroad program.

* Any activity credits completed in a study abroad program may be substituted for PED 366, 368, 371, 372 and one hour of elective credit.

Upon satisfactory completion of the four-year program in physical education, and upon submitting evidence of having achieved a level of performance satisfactory to the Commissioner of Education on the New York State Teacher Certificate Examination, graduates receive the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education and an initial New York State certification in the special field of physical education.
