Goals & Objectives

Program Goals

The goals of our Physical Education Teacher Preparation Program at SUNY Cortland are three fold:

  1. to develop effective and reflective physical education professionals for our nation’s schools.
  2. to prepare our students to serve as future advocates for quality physical education in our schools.
  3. to maintain a high-quality teacher preparation program that serves the teaching profession through student/faculty scholarship and service at the local, state, and national levels.

Program Objectives

The following objectives are central to the mission of the Physical Education Teacher Preparation Program at SUNY Cortland.  The program will:

  1. provide a broad liberal education as well as a solid foundation in the academic sub disciplines within physical education.
  2. clarify the role that participation in physical activity plays in contributing to positive attitudes, values, behaviors and character development.
  3. endorse fitness in all its forms (cognitive, affective, psychomotor) including modeling, promoting and teaching fitness as an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  4. maintain a curriculum which incorporates the goals and concepts of the New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education and the Standards of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
  5. provide models of developmentally appropriate motor and sports skill progressions.
  6. provide motor skill competence for all ability levels.
  7. promote planning and pedagogical skills to reach educational goals
  8. emphasize disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge necessary for the development of safe learning environments.
  9. promote a wide variety of assessment strategies for learners of all ability levels.
  10. support an exploration of the values and forms of student diversity, providing opportunities for all individuals to participate in multiple activities in a variety of environments.
  11. prepare students for professional growth through critical thinking, integration and application of course content through authentic teaching/coaching experiences.
  12. assist students to develop and use effective communication and interpersonal skills. 
  13. provide students with opportunities to use and apply technology within a variety of settings appropriate to the discipline of physical education.
  14. inculcate a professional, philosophical and ethical foundation for teaching.
  15. foster the understanding of professional, moral and legal responsibilities of teaching.
  16. encourage self-sustained life-long learning.
