Social Philosophy Club Meetings - Fall 2006

We now have a regular meeting time and place!!

Please join us on Thursdays in Room 127 from 6-8 PM in Old Main! :-)

Meetings will consist of club business, plans and goals, and especially..........Philosophy!! Expect weekly discussion topics. If you have any topics in particular that you would like to see discussed, please send suggestions to Stephanie and she will work them into our agenda. We encourage members to take turns facilitating our philosophical discussions.

Stephanie has reserved a room for a very, very informal gathering. If people are interested in Social Philosophy as a major or a club, bring them along! It's one of the conference rooms and only seats 16, but we can overflow. We are going to try and elect officers and decide on a regular meeting time so please attend if at all possible. :-)

Meeting Time and Place:

3:30 - 5:00 PM
SUNY Cortland
Old Main, Room 127

Everyone is welcome!

October 11, 2006

We want to get together to discuss our reactions to Julie's talk "Is Philosophy a Spiritual Science?" from last week. Don't worry if you weren't able to attend the talk - you will not be left out! We hope that several people will be able to attend. This is not necessarily the official meeting time - in fact, it will most likely not be on a Wednesday. We are still working on finding a regular time and place to meet - we'll keep you updated!!

Meeting Time and Place:

6:00 - 7:30 PM
SUNY Cortland
Old Main, Room 127

Please come! :-)

October 19, 2006

This week we would like to spend some time discussing our reactions to the thesis that Dr. Fitz-Gibbon presented to some of us in Phi Problems this week: "Love as a Basis for Morality." It's unlikely that Dr. Fitz-Gibbon can attend the meeting since Thursdays are bad for him, but we wanted to discuss it anyway.

We will also spend a hopefully brief period of time going over club business such as the status of our Constitution as well as further discussion on ideas for future meetings and/or events.

Meeting Time and Place:

6:00 - 7:30 PM
SUNY Cortland
Old Main, Room 127

October 26, 2006

This week we plan to do a recap/discussion of Tariq Ali's talk on Fundamentalism as our philosophical topic of the week. We also have a fair bit of business to get through - we need to discuss things that we want to do and how much they will cost so that we can get a budget together for Jason to take to Contingency. Additionally, we need to plan a fundraiser for this semester so if you have any good ideas, by all means share them with the club!

In addition: The usual Club wackiness will ensue.

Meeting Time and Place:

6:00 - 7:30 PM
SUNY Cortland
Old Main, Room 127

6:00 - 8:00 PM

Today's Topic:

War

A very brief history of war ethics, wars of aggression, war crimes, is there such a thing as a 'just war,' can ethics apply to war, non-violence, pacifism

"Some people argue that the Just War doctrine is inherently immoral, while others suggest that there is no place for ethics in war. Still others argue that the doctrine doesn't apply in the conditions of modern conflicts."

Source: "Against the Theory of the Just War"

In addition, some business will be covered - mainly discussion of our up-coming fundraiser.

Meeting Time and Place:

6:00 - 8:00 PM
SUNY Cortland
Old Main, Room 127

November 23, 2006

No meeting this week - Happy Thanksgiving!!

November 30, 2006

Today's Topic: Can our thoughts affect the world around us?

Different perspectives will be explored: Connecting some of the ideas from Julie Hugo's talk earlier this semster, "Is Philosophy a Spiritual Science?" as well as the ideas that she drew on from the movie, "What the Bleep do we Know?," and the perspective of the Global Conciousness Project, which examines changes in the random "white noise" of the universe in response to periods of intense human mental activity, such as group meditations or the response to globally significant tragic events, such as 9/11 or the tsunami.

Meeting Time and Place:

6:00 - 8:00 PM

December 7, 2006
