Letter From the President, December 2006

The semester is over?  The semester is over!

As some of you may know, we worked very hard to get the Social Philosophy Club reinstated with SGA.  It was difficult and we ran up against some problems, but we made it through and are an officially recognized club once again!  Thank you to everyone who helped – I never could have done it on my own.

Now that we are a club, however, we have many plans for the future and many issues we would like to tackle.  We have a dedicated core group of about six, but we need more!  We do plan topics for each week’s meeting, so check your email for that.  We had an interesting meeting last week.  We were joined by a physics professor who helped us through some of the fringes of quantum theory.  This is why we want outside participation; we love learning about topics beyond the scope of our current knowledge.  If there is a topic that you would like to discuss, let us know and we will add it to the list!

One of the projects we have planned for next semester is a "newsletter," for lack of a better word.  We would like to publish short student and faculty papers, from all departments and majors.  We will be sending out a call for submissions soon, so be thinking about something you would be interested in submitting.  Another plan is to try to get a philosophy program into the public schools.  Some members are focused on the high school grades, while others are thinking along the lines of elementary students.  We will also be doing two fundraisers next semester, which should be loads of fun!  Think Monty Python argument skit, only with philosophical concepts instead…

Thanks again to everyone who has been contributing to the club.  I am so lucky to be involved with such a wonderful department.  Tell your friends about philosophy club and remember, it’s not some high, cloudy mountaintop upon which we all sit.  We all use philosophy every day, whether we know it or not.  Not only will philosophy help to tune your critical thinking skills, it will benefit you in any career you might pursue.  Besides, we have so much fun!  You wouldn’t want to miss out on that, would you?
