Our Mission

The Performing Arts Department has, at the center of its mission, four primary areas of emphasis:

  • to provide high quality music, theatre and dance education and training for its students;
  • to foster advancements in performance, creativity, research, scholarship and teaching among its faculty;
  • to serve the general student population of the College; and
  • to act as an educational cultural resource for the College, the Cortland community, and national and international constituencies.

Implicit in the mission of the Performing Arts Department are specific goals that are relevant to students enrolled in music, theatre and dance, faculty who teach within the department, and the broader arts community. The primary goals are:

  • to provide musical theatre majors, and music, theatre, American musical theatre minors with a high quality pre-professional education;
  • to provide opportunities for other SUNY Cortland students to increase their musical and theatrical skill, understanding and appreciation;
  • to provide the music and theatre faculty with opportunities for creative activity, scholarly inquiry; and
  • to serve as an educational and cultural resource for the College, and local and global communities.
