LIFE IN THE WOODS September 21-26, 2008 LIFE IN THE WOODS is a carefully designed adventure in learning for adults wishing to engage in low to moderate level activities while experiencing the fabulous history and extraordinary nature of the Adirondacks. Highlights of the trip include:
Facilities & LocationAccommodations for the duration of our visit will be at Antlers, SUNY Cortland’s Outdoor Education Center, on Raquette Lake. We will be housed in comfortable lodge/cabin with indoor bathroom facilities. You will need to provide bed linens or a sleeping bag.
The following phone number is given for use in an emergency situation only: Antlers Office (315) 354-4631. A phone is available in the Main Lodge for personal calls, however, does not have long distance service. Please bring a calling card if you anticipate making calls.
Transportation Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Nature Ed-Ventures staff will meet participants at Antlers mid-afternoon on Sunday, September 21. Directions to Raquette Lake will be mailed to all registrants. Meals All meals are included in the fee, beginning with dinner on Sunday and concluding with breakfast on Friday. Home-style cooked meals will be prepared and served at Antlers. In keeping with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, meals are served family-style. We will share kitchen patrol (KP) duties for assisting with meal setups and cleanups. Please let us know as soon as possible of any diet restrictions. Guests may need to bring specialty food items with them to properly supplement their diet. If you bring food, we will make room in the Center refrigerator and kitchen for storage. Insurance The cost of any medical treatment beyond basic first aid is the responsibility of the participant. We will have a first aid kit with standard supplies with us at all times. Loss or damage to personal equipment is each individual’s responsibility.
MedicalWe strongly urge that each participant be in good physical condition for participation in low to moderate physical activities. Your safety and well being is our first consideration. Equipment Registrants will receive a "What to Bring" list to assist them in preparing for the trip. Rooms have standard size twin beds. A sleeping bag or sheets for a twin-sized bed is required. A plastic coated pillow and a wool blanket are provided on each bed. Leadership Instructors at all venues are the best professional teachers and educators to be found. All are highly qualified, insuring consistent quality programming. They are sincere and enthusiastic. Judy Thaler and Wayne Robins, partners in Nature Ed-Ventures, will be leaders for this adventure. Judy, administrative partner, has developed and led other similar adventures, including similar study tours with students and adults, study tours to Alaska, and serves as Camp Director for their residential camp programs. She was the Director of Education for 16 years at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Wayne, lead naturalist, is well versed in the natural history of the Adirondack region. He possesses a wide range of outdoor skills and has worked extensively in developing and leading programs at Camp Allegany, Allegany State Park for family weekends, residential summer camps (where he serves as Assistant Camp Director) and teacher training sessions. He worked over 30 years at the Buffalo Museum of Science in various capacities, including senior staff naturalist. RegistrationRegistration is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. A non-refundable $80 deposit is required at the time of registration. Please complete and submit the registration form along with your deposit. All registrations will be accepted in order of receipt and validated when accompanied by the required deposit. Balance of payment is due by August 15th. A late fee of $50 will be charged for payments not made on time. Telephone and e-mail registrations will be held for five days at which time they must be secured with a deposit.
Rates The special alumni rate of $350 includes lodging, meals, equipment use, all program fees, and services of naturalists and instructors. Cancellations Cancellations received more than 45 days (August 7) before the program will result in a refund of 75% of the total amount; from 30 to 45 days (August 7-24) in advance, 50% of the total tuition. We are unable to refund any amount for cancellations within 30 days (August 21-September 21) of the program. |
