By far the most striking bolete in the northeast, B. frostii has a shiny red pileus, deep red pores usually beaded with yellowish droplets, and a bright red stipe that is deeply reticulated to its base. It is associated with oak, widely distributed in the eastern, southern and southwestern states, reaching Mexico in the south.
