This is an overall yellow bolete with a strongly reticulated stipe and bitter taste of the context. The color of the pileus is variable, from pure yellow to dark gray or with mixtures of the two colors. A similar taxon is B. retipes (Berkeley & Curtis) with the pileus "powdered with yellow' and the stipe "reticulated to base, pulverulent downwards."
