Not only is the stipe variable, but the whole bolete is quite variable, in color, extent of reticulation and other features. Characteristic are the areolate pileus and the white reticulum over a grey-brown ground color, especially noticeable in the apical area. A very dark variety was named var. fagicola by Smith & Thiers.
