An overall deep red to purplish red bolete with dark
red pores and a stipe that is "coarsely reticulate with dark
red reticulations." It occurs with hardwoods, apparently widely
distributed from Michigan eastward. It seems to be close to B. flammans (Dick & Snell)
with lighter red colors, a viscid pileus and associated with conifers.
