Boletus speciosus var. brunneus
Peck

This is often misidentified as Boletus speciosus (Frost)
or Boletus pseudopeckii (Smith & Thiers). B. speciosus was described as having
a "scarlet lake red" pileus, while B. pseudopeckii has a pileus that is "rose or brick-red"
and a yellow stipe "with a red zone at the apex." Var. brunneus has a vinaceous brown
pileus and a yellow stipe that is always red in the lower half. Its flesh, pores and stipe stain
blue readily when bruised.
