Originally described from Michigan but now known to be transcontinental (Baroni & Both, 1991). Similar to Chalciporus piperatus (Bulliard) Singer, it differs in the blue staining of the pore surface and context, the olivaceous spore deposit and the fleeting amyloid reaction on spores and revived tube trama in Melzer's.
