This bolete is part of a difficult complex that needs further study especially on the molecular level. B. chrysenteron is typically areolate with red interspaces, the color of the pileus being variable from grayish brown to reddish, often tinged olivaceous. The stipe yellow and red pruinose. Baroni et. al. have recently published a new taxon in this complex: Boletus patrioticus Baroni, A. E. Bessette & Roody. See also Boletellus intermedius A.H. Smith & Thiers.
