Because of the tobacco-brown to rusty pores and tubes it is placed by some in Tylopilus, while others place it in Leccinum because of the densely scabrous-dotted stipe. The pileus is velvety and purplish-brown. Some people have developed gasto-intestinal problems after eating it.
