Boletus firmus
Frost

The history of this taxon is interesting. Frost
described it in 1874. In 1943 Coker and Beers described it as Boletus satanus var. americanus,
while Grand and A.H. Smith called it B. piedmontensis in 1971. A gray pileus,
yellow tubes with red pores and a yellowish stipe with red tones and a reticulum
are characteristic for this taxon. The context is bitter, a rare feature among red-pored boletes. A
similar taxon is B. manicus (Heim), described from New Guinea, likewise with a bitter taste.
