Boletus auriflammeus
Berkeley & Curtis
=Pulveroboletus auriflammeus (Berkeley & Curtis) Singer

Photograph by T. J. Baroni ©1998
Overall golden yellow to golden orange with many pores stained pale crimson and the stipe somewhat reticulated, this unusual bolete stains the collector's fingers golden yellow and hence was placed by Singer in Pulveroboletus, even though it lacks a veil. Singer interpreted the powdery substance covering the bolete as the remnant of a (powdery) veil. For the first thorough, modern description see Baroni (1998: Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 36: 245-255).
