Boletus innixus
Frost (=Boletus caespitosus Peck)

©1998 For many years B. innixus and B. caespitosus
were treated as synonyms of B. auriporus Peck. B. innixus is
characterized by its gourd-like, tomentose basal area (very viscid in wet weather) and
its yellow mycelium and its frequently caespitose habit. In contrast, B. auriporus
has white basal mycelium, non-gourd like basal area that is usually white, and a
minute yellow floccosity covering the stipe. Singer included these taxa in his concept
of the genus Pulveroboletus (interpreting the viscidity as a kind of veil) while
Pouzar created the genus Aureoboletus to accomodate these and similar taxa with
bright yellow hymenophore.
