Suillus subaureus

Some authors maintain that Suillus subaureus is the
only Suillus not associated with conifers. However, Peck collected it under pines
(presumably eastern white pine) and its reported distribution coincides with the distribution
of white pine (Pinus strobus) in the northeast. With the disappearance of large tracks
of white pine during the 19th and early 20th centuries, this Suillus succeeded in populating
other habitats (aspen, mixed woods of yellow birch and hemlocks, etc.).
It is golden yellow overall, the pileus developing red streaks, and the stipe without annulus,
glandular dotted, bruising brown.
