The black, velvety pileus and the black, non-reticulated stipe are characteristic. The white context changes to reddish, then blackish when cut. Two similar species are T. atratus Both and T. atronicotianus Both (1998, Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 36: 215-232), the first of smaller statue and a white context which changes to black directly, the second with a non-velvety, dark tobacco-brown pileus. All three taxa may occur in very dry weather.
