This is the only bolete with a powdery veil in North America. The veil is unusual in that it is not a thin membrane (as in Suillus) but a somewhat gelatinous structure that fills the entire cavity between stipe apex and pore surface. Before becoming powdery and disintegrating. Widely distributed in the east, south and northwest of North America, it is also found in Asia.
