Protestant Campus Ministry

Chuck MaxfieldCharles "Chuck" Maxfield is currently interim Protestant campus minister.

He says, "Religion is not one department of life, like Economics or Sociology. Religious Faith is the lens through which we look at all of life. Through the stories of our faith, we find meaning and we develop values that will guide us in everything we do. Religious faith gives us the vision and the courage to live fully. During the college years, we prepare for the future, not just by acquiring facts, but by defining and refining our personalities, as spiritual beings. I want to be there for any individuals and groups that are taking this task seriously."

MISSION

The call for the Protestant campus pastor is to be a visible presence of Jesus Christ for the students, faculty and staff at SUNY Cortland. Pastor Maxfield is always available to students who need a compassionate listener. He is ready to do presentations in residence halls and to help facilitate service programs for the students and faculty. He can be reached at (607) 753-6246 or (607) 423-5798.

PROGRAMS

  • Peer Counseling: In the peer counseling program, upper class students are available to respond to the needs of students through one-on-one contact or through programs in the residence halls. If someone wishes to contact a peer counselor, they may call the campus pastor at (607) 753-1002 or (607) 756-8142, the SUNY Cortland Counseling Center at (607) 753-4728, or a residence hall director.
  • Grief Support Group: Since 1987, Pastor Wilcox has helped co-facilitate a grief support group on campus each semester. Anyone interested in being a part of this group can contact him at (607) 753-1002 or (607) 756-8142, or call Cathy Smith, health educator in Student Support Services, at (607) 753-2066.
  • Cortland Student Volunteer Project: The volunteer project, an outgrowth of Pastor Wilcox's ministry, is now under the umbrella of the Student Government Association. Student coordinators help facilitate student participation in a whole variety of volunteer opportunities in the community and on campus. If you are interested in being a volunteer, contact Pastor Wilcox or the Volunteer Project housed in Career Services, Van Hoesen Hall, Room B-5, at (607) 753-4715.
