This first assignment will require you to write a short essay (3 double-spaced pages) in which you discuss women and self-image.
The first segment of this course deals with the topic of “Women, Beauty, and Self-Image.” In a thoughtful essay, please discuss from what various sources in society women derive their sense of self. What do we mean by a “sense of self”? What do women measure themselves against? And why? Why is low self-esteem among women so pervasive today? Using any one of the works from the first segment of the course, examine how and why any woman character sees herself the way that she does. What is her self-image like? Does the reader see the character the same way that she sees herself, or differently? Why?
