IST STUDENT PROFILES

Current Students:

Jen Newman (junior)

Concentration: Individualized (international communications)
Language: French

Career Goals: U.S. Government State Department or UN Translator. Also considering graduate school.

Jen's comments on the IST major:

"I think the IST major is very liberal and offers a broad background in International Studies. It is extremely versatile and opens up a plethora of different possibilities. I was able to create a concentration that included the classes I felt I needed to get what I am looking for out of my education. When I finish at Cortland I will have a very solid foundation to begin building upon. I am, by no means, limited to particular career choices which is very important to me. International Studies majors are also, plain and simple, cool people."

Arete Georgakopoulos (freshman)

Concentration: Europe
Languages: Greek, French and possibly German

Career Goals: International business and banking, or UN Translator.

Arete's comments on the IST major:

"I'm new to college so I don't have much to say yet, except that it seems like a good program and am very confident that I will achieve my goals through this program. I have heard many good things about the IST program at Cortland and this is why I'm here."

Jennifer Demme (graduated May, 1992)

Concentration: History
Language: Spanish

Present Situation: Freelance Producer for MTV and Independent Films

Jennifer's comments on the IST major:

"I liked the fact that it has so many disciplines within the major-you weren't limited. I felt that being an IST major at [SUNY Cortland] gave me a real education in history for the first time in all my years in school. I also felt that the quality of education I received for a state school (vs. private, e.g., Syracuse, Cornell, Ithaca), was fantastic."
