The International Studies Major Requirements
 
The International Studies major requires 36 hours of course work along with a foreign language requirement of 12 hours of course work, or the equivalent proficiency beyond the all-college requirement. Every student will graduate with an understanding of the historical and economic processes that brought about the present-day global structure, and each student will be fluent in at least one language, or proficient in at least two. These qualifications, in combination with the student's chosen concentration, provides an exemplary preparation for careers or further study in any international field.
 
The IST major consists of the following components:
 
Component A: The IST Core Courses
 
Each student is required to take the following courses (for a total of 15 credit hours):
 
  HIS 101: The World Since 1500  
  ECO 105: Introduction to Political Economy and Public Policy  
  IST 200: The Making of the International System  
  IST 210: The Making of the Modern World  
  IST 400: Themes in International Studies  
 
Component B: The IST Concentration
 
Each student will choose one of the following concentrations (for a total of 21 credit hours):

Individualized Concentration
 
This concentration, developed in consultation with the IST coordinator and the student's advisor, is designed to meet the interests and post-graduate goals of the student. The concentration must be interdisciplinary and coherent, with a conceptual theme (e.g., development), or multi-disciplinary (e.g. international communication and public policy).
 
Component C: Foreign Language
 
IST majors must fulfill the regular SUNY Cortland language requirement of 13 hours of college-level language stury or its equivalent. In addition, IST majors are required to demonstrate additional foreign language proficiency in one of the following ways:
 
1) By completing 12 hours of coursework in a foreign language at the 300-level or above.
2) By completing a semester of study abroad in the target language.
3) By satisfying the all-college foreign language requirement in a second foreign language.
4) By earning a rating of Intermediate High on a standardized foreign language examination.
