This provides students with an understanding of African peoples and cultures and how those peoples have been affected, over time, by contacts with a much wider world, enabling the major to grasp Africa's position in the modern world.

This concentration aims to provide students with an understanding of the world from a geographic perspective: the study of the interdependence of human and environmental factors. The History concentration offers students an understanding of the forces that operated through the centuries to make the world as it is today. Focusing particularly on the last 500 years, this concentration traces the historical basis of the modern world system and then allows students to focus on particular areas and examine how those areas came to fit into the world system.

Political Science
 
The study of political science is central to an understanding both of the political life of areas of the world such as Latin America, Europe, Africa but also to the dynamics of international politics. The political science concentration provides a solid grounding in the study of politics and prepares students for study abroad, for post-graduate study in law or politics, and for a wide variety of careers in government, law, the private sector, and the non-governmental sector. Above all, it provides students as citizens with the intellectual skills to understand the world around them.
