in Latin American Literature”

 

SUNY Cortland 2008 Summer Session II

We will study selected Latin American literary works and films in an effort to explore both the representation of otherness and the invention of the self (whether communal or individual). This course is for master’s credit and will be taught in Spanish. 

 

Readings and films may include:

  • Popul vuh: Las antiguas historias del Quiché (ed. Adrián Recinos), and the film Popul vuh: The creation myth of the Maya (dir. Patricia Amlin, 1989)
  • Naufragios, Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, and the film Cabeza de Vaca (dir. Nicolás Evhevarría, 1990)
  • Los empeños de una casa, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, along with the play House of Trials (Oklahoma City University, 1996, dir. David Pasto), and the film Yo, la peor de todas (dir. María Luisa Bemberg, 1990).
  • La verdad sospechosa, Juan Ruíz de Alarcón, and the play The Liar (Antaeus Company, dir. Anne McNaughton, 2000)
  • Huasipungo, Jorge Icaza, and the film El cielo para la Cunshi (dir. Gustavo Guayasamin, 1975)
  • Crónica de una muerte anunciada, Gabriel García Márquez, and the film version of the same title, dir. Francesco Rosi, 1987
