Graduate Programs

The History Department offers two graduate programs:

Master of Arts in History (MA)
Master of Science in Education in Adolescence Social Studies (7-12) (MSED)

The Master of Arts in History serves students who are either planning to go on for a Ph.D. in history at another institution, or who need a terminal master's degree for permanent certification in teaching adolescence social studies, or who wish to use the master's degree in history for careers in public history, library science, business, professional schools such as law or social work, or state and federal civil service.

The Master of Arts in History features reading and writing seminars with an excellent teaching faculty and no more than 18 students. In addition to teaching the content in their fields of expertise, faculty will help guide students to write research papers and in general to improve their historical writing skills.

The Master of Science in Education with a concentration in history is designed for students who intend to pursue a career as secondary social studies teachers with an emphasis on history. All students in the program must have their provisional or initial teaching certificate since the program does not include supervising student teaching. Students will gain advanced knowledge of topics in history, interact with other social studies teachers (many students in the program are already teaching), and engage in original research and writing in the field of history. Completing the program and receiving the M.S.Ed. fulfills the state requirement for permanent certification.
