Mission Statement
|
For more than fifty years, the Health Department has been involved in the preparation of school health education personnel and has provided local, state and national leadership to the development of school health education programming.
The mid-1970s brought a change in departmental activities with a second baccalaureate program in health science and expansion from the school health area into the broad area of public health. This program has been designed to meet the needs and interests of students who are seeking careers in community health and may be taken as a general degree in health science or with a specialization in health administration and planning, environmental health, community health education, wellness/health promotion or allied health.
The allied health concentration was approved in 1998 and has been specially designed to help students meet prerequisite requirements for post-baccalaureate programs once the student completes the SUNY Cortland degree. The diversity of offerings and thstrength of the professional curriculum have made the College's health program one of the largest of its kind in the country.
The department is deeply committed to helping its students gain the knowledge, skills and general background necessary for their performance as beginning professionals or entry into post-baccalaureate programs. At the same time, we firmly believe that our students need to be broadly educated and need a strong grounding in the liberal arts.
We strive to help students appreciate our diverse cultural heritage, develop respect for human diversity and grow in their ability to function in a pluralistic society. We believe that our programs and the overall Cortland experience will enable our graduates to be high quality health professionals, good citizens, positive contributors to their communities, and people who will be enthusiastic about committing their professional time and energy to promoting the common good. |
