General Information

About Cortland

SUNY Cortland is located in a charming town in the hills of Central New York State. Local information about restaurants, motels, inns and attractions are available through the Cortland County Visitors Bureau and the City of Cortland. The campus is blocks from the quaint downtown area, with numerous opportunities for shopping, dining, entertainment and socializing.

The nearest major city and international airport is located about 40 minutes from Cortland in Syracuse. New York City is a four to five hour drive to the south. Because of the number of colleges and universities in the area, excellent bus service is available to New York City at very reasonable prices.

Matriculated Students

Graduate students may attend day or evening classes as part of a degree program on a part-time or full-time basis. Graduate students are considered academically full time at nine credit hours, but require 12 credit hours for full-time status for financial aid.

Non-Degree/Non-Matriculated Attendance

If you hold a bachelor’s degree, you may attend graduate courses on a part-time, non-matriculated basis. All prerequisites for the courses in which you plan to enroll must be fulfilled.  Non-matriculated students are not assigned advisors and register after degree students. Graduate non-degree students (NON) may not register for more than three courses.

If you wish to become matriculated or pursue a degree, you will need to apply formally for admission before you complete three courses. Waiting to apply after the three courses are completed will prevent you from registering for more courses. Financial aid (including student loans) is available only to students who have been accepted into a degree program at SUNY Cortland.

Non-Matriculated Student Status-International Students

International students (including those with permanent resident status in the United States) who are not accepted into a degree program and wish to take graduate courses as a non-matriculated student, must register and pay for their classes in the Graduate Studies Office. You will need to provide the following information when you register:

Copy of your Visa or Permanent Resident Card
Visa type
Nationality
Country of citizenship
Country of birth

Parking

Students attending daytime classes are required to have a parking permit. After 5:00 p.m. all lots are available and permits are not required.  The University Police Department, is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 7 a.m.-3:30 pm. on Fridays; or you may register for a permit on the University Police web site. Please call (607) 753-4123 if you have questions concerning parking.

Registration

The course schedule can be accessed through Banner Web for Students during Web registration and through the Registrar's web site. Only matriculated students may register online.

Matriculated graduate students may register on the web without payment until web registration closes for the term. Please refer to the Registrar’s Web page for further information on Web registration and calendar. Students who do not pay their tuition bill by the payment date on the bill, will be de-registered.

Matriculated students who do not register during the official Web registration period may enroll and pay at the time of registration on a continuous basis up until the beginning of the term, or register the day before classes begin during general registration for the fall or spring terms. Registration forms are available, after web registration closes, through the Registrar’s Web site, and may be faxed, mailed, or delivered in person to the Graduate Studies Office with payment. Faxed forms will require credit card information.
