In March 2001, Dr. Robert Darling travelled to Nepal as part of
a research project with Dr. Louis Derry and Ph.D student, Matt Evans
(Cornell University). The three geologists are studying hot spring
and river water chemistry as well as fluid inclusions in late stage
hydrothermal quartz. Dr. Darling joined Dr. Derry and Mr. Evans
and six Nepali porters for 15 days of trekking and sampling in the
Himalayas.
This year's recipient of the Darwin Prize for excellence in Historical
Geology is Freshperson Emily Hopkin (pictured below). Emily's talk
was on was on the Extinction of Upper Cambrian - Lower Ordovician
Trilobites. Congratulations!
Several faculty and students attended this spring's Northeast Geological
society of America meeting in Burlington Vermont. Undergraduate
senior James Milligan (right) made an oral presentation on his tree-ring
Holocene paleoclimate research from Alaska that was supervised by
Dr. Barclay (left)
We are pleased to announce Dr. Gayle Gleason as our newest addition
to the geology faculty at SUNY Cortland. Dr. Gleason will be replacing
Dr. Fauth in teaching structural geology and contributing to the
field camp. Dr. Gleason has taught Colby and Oberlin Colleges and
conducted experimental microstructural work on minerals at University
of California Riverside and Brown University (where she also received
her PhD). Welcome aboard!
